The City of Bath, on the River Avon, is considered one of Britain’s most elegant Georgian cities.

The Roman Baths were discovered when some buildings in the centre collapsed, and when engineers tried to discover the cause, they found the Roman Baths in almost perfect condition under the foundations. Near boiling water bubbles up from deep inside the earth; tourists can visit the Roman Museum, which sits on this font and is still an archeological site.

Jane Austin would sit in the Pump Room (now a cafe and restaurant) and write about Bath. The famous Assembly Rooms and Museum of Costumes help us to see the lifestyles and fashions of times gone by.

The present Bath Abbey dates from 1499, and replaced an older abbey. It was founded by Bishop Oliver after he had a dream that God asked him to build a new one. In the Square just outside the Abbey, there is almost continuous entertainment by eccentric performers - well worth watching!
